Born on June 20, 1947 in Chalon-sur-Saône (Saône-et-Loire department), Gérard Collomb is Senator-Mayor of Lyon and President of Greater Lyon.

Gérard Collomb became an associate professor of classical literature in 1970. By the late 1960s, he participated in the rebuilding of the Socialist party in the Rhône department. He entered the Lyon municipal council in 1977 and was elected to a congressional position in 1981 at the age of 34.
Appointed national secretary of the Socialist party, delegate for external relations and then for developing countries, Gérard Collomb participated in the creation of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation, becoming its general secretary from its inception in 1992. He was also a member of the social and economic council and a regional councilor of the Rhône-Alpes region (from 1992 to 1999).

After being elected mayor of Lyon's 9th district, he became a member of Greater Lyon's executive branch, which was chaired by Raymond Barre. A senator by 2000, he won the 2001 Lyon municipal elections, becoming mayor of Lyon and president of Greater Lyon. On March 9, 2008, he was reelected mayor of Lyon in the first round. On March 31, 2014, he was reelected for a third term as head of the city of Lyon, and then Greater Lyon, which became the metropolis of Lyon as of January 1, 2015.
He was also re-elected as senator of Rhône on September 28, 2014.
